Occupational Therapy (AOTA)
Occupational Therapy helps people to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations), throughout their lifespan. Occupational Therapists enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by promoting health, and helping them to prevent or live more independently with injury, illness, or disability. Occupational Therapy is a holistic approach, in which the focus is on function, adapting the environment and/or daily activities to fit the person, and maximizing independence in the adult or child through the use of purposeful and meaningful activities.
Occupational Therapists are trained to evaluate, identify, and treat limitations associated with upper extremity function. Although fine motor skills are typically associated with the use of the hands, development in other parts of the body also affect the ability of the hands to work with good coordination and accuracy in performance of daily activities. Some activities commonly addressed include fine-motor coordination, skilled range of motion, feeding and self-care techniques, handwriting skills, sensory-integration, neuromuscular rehabilitation, adaptive equipment needs, splint fabrication and use, visual-perceptual skills, and cognitive retraining.
Occupational therapy services may include:
• Upper Extremity and Fine Motor Skills Rehabilitation
• Neuromuscular Rehabilitation
• Cognitive Rehabilitation
• Visual/Perception Treatment and Rehabilitation
• Orthopedic Rehabilitation
• Adaptive Equipment Evaluation
